Our Vintage & White Christmas Tree

The tree is decorated!

It was done in three parts, due to our busy week! David picked out a splendid fir this year, with a lovely, fairly narrow profile and some quirky bits (extra long branches here and there!) that are very charming.

I decorate our tree with all our collected new and vintage ornaments. To balance all the different colours, I start with a generous swath of white garland and then I fill in the blanks with white and green balls.
My Christmas colours are green and mocha and white and silver (with a little vintage mustard yellow). It sounds like an odd combination, but has a very historical feel and works with the room, which is currently white/cream and mocha brown and green. When I've bought new ornaments, I've tried to keep them historical/vintage looking and also in this colour range. We have the odd red or blue or orange ornament, but I don't sweat it (I sometimes just tuck them in less obvious places)!
Everyone enjoys looking at our varied ornaments and I think our tree has a lot of character. The historical look is helped along by two strands of pearl bead garland (I need to get more) which remind me of my grandparents' trees from childhood. We have a lighted white star on top, which is vintage.

The white and silver helps to calm all the miscellaneous colours down too! I don't care for themed trees, although I would love to have white lights (David insists on coloured lights, and since he rarely expresses a decorating opinion, I don't argue!).

Our new linen tree skirt is lovely and Biscuit adores it. He has been sleeping on it, so it is usually askew. I will show you a close-up later.

I am off work this afternoon as we are heading out to Lake Louise (two hours away, in the Rocky Mountains) for David's company Christmas party at the glorious Post Hotel & Spa. I can't wait!

Happy Christmas!

  2. So, so pretty! I love how some branches are longer here and there. We don't have a theme with our tree either. We have all kinds of great ornaments... I think that makes it more fun! :)

  6. Your room looks like one of Martha Stewart's elegant creations! I like the look of vintage ornaments and the tree with "character"...

  7. Restraining the color palette to make it look more historical is a great suggestion. I have a gazillion ornaments so maybe I'll try leaving off all strong primaries this year to see how it looks.

  10. I'm with Biscuit, that is a lovely tree skirt. Did you make it?

Also, the white ribbon in the tree ties everything together in a very balanced way.

  12. Your tree is stunning and it looks so great in your beautiful room. By the way to answer your question on my sofa it is deep (but that's because it's a tight back). and I had it custom made.

  16. Hi Terri!

Wow what a beautiful Christmas tree! I love the way it at the same time fits perfectly into your home and also enhances your home :) And those cat pictures are really cute! Hehe I also thought of candy when I saw the tree! How lucky that noone else had taken it! We've been really busy for various reasons but now my two year course is finally over and I am happy to have finished it and I can now start working as an interpreter which will be very interesting and stimulating I'm sure! I hope that all is well with you both and I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! :)

    Hugs, Susanne
