Restful ~ Graceful ~ Tranquil spaces

As I peruse decorating magazines and stacks (literally) of decorating books from the library, I find my eye seeking out the same sorts of images time and again. My eye (and my heart, it seems) always settles on quietly peaceful rooms, spaces that are slightly spare, rooms containing plenty of white (okay, a lot of white), beds and sofas and whole rooms that look calm and restful and inviting. I fall in love, over and over again, with these soft, milky white colours, these soft blues and greys, pale taupes, any colours really with a lot of white or grey in them.

And being a texture fanatic, I like rustic nubby things and soft wooly things and fluffy pretty things that make you want to reach into the page and...touch!

Perhaps because I *a d o r e* sleeping (and resting) so much, I seek out rooms that seem to invite you in to take a nap, or better yet... just lay there in a space so quietly beautiful you don't want to close your eyes.

And I don't like rooms that look "done" by a decorator, so I find myself staring lustily at rooms that look like they are lived in by handsome, graceful people, maybe a pair of well-travelled academics with a taste for botany, books, old world handicrafts, eclectic art, the road less travelled. Their rooms are accumulated, not "bought", put together from a life well-lived, filled with a tastefully-edited collection of good quality things, interesting found things, adored things...

You are off to a great start with your sense of style! I too love rooms that don't appear decorated but yet are evolved from a well-lived life. LOVE that! Have fun with your new place! I will check back and and see how it is coming along!
    Have a great weekend!

  4. Ahhhh.... all of these spaces really do make me feel like I could walk into them and be so at ease (and of course, take a nap!).

  5. Love those whitey rooms, I so need to have white painted floors like in one of the shots you posted, maybe in my little girls room??
Who needs a perfectly matched room that doesn't look lived in , no fun.

  6. That bent wooden chair in the second photo is to die for...

You certainly are keenly aware of what your style is. That should make the shopping a whole lot easier. I love the thrown together look too. My sister is an expert at it. I think it comes from one's personality. We organizers and list makers have a more difficult time with it...(I'm speaking for myself).

  7. Beautiful rooms, and a great post! It seems like you are narrowing down to your real style. Have you looked into Swedish decor? It seems as if many of the Swedish styled rooms have light furniture, lots of greys from blue grey to wispy white grey, perhaps to counteract all of the darkness they have in the winter.

  8. An accumulated, not bought look is what I'm going for too because it really speaks volumes more about who you are than any pre-packaged version off the shelf.

I am an individual, not a mass market item, and thats what I want my house to reflect.

Sounds like you're getting down to the nitty-gritty details of what your style really is. That is so liberating when that starts to happen because then it makes shopping so much easier!

I like the idea of Swedish decor for you too. You should research all the various nuances of Scandinavian styles. They do use a lot of the lighter colors you seem to adore, plus they have a great relationship with nature that you seem to enjoy also. Seems like it might be right up your alley.

I'll have to see if I can dig up some images for you and post them on my blog. Oooh! Fun project!
