Which Do You Love Most?

If you're anything like me (and I know you are...), you're thoroughly addicted to home and decor magazines. Being a semi-sensible girl, I allow myself two or three a month (of course, that's in addition to my subscription to Canadian House & Home, a gift from my boyfriend).

I love getting my subscription in the mail each month (and hey, it's cheaper), but what I also love is walking down to a drugstore a few blocks from my office (especially on days when goings on at the office are a little dreary), and seeing what new magazines are in. I just love those three blocks of anticipation! I look through the cooking magazines (especially Cooking Light), and then I flip through Real Simple, and usually end up browsing through Domino, one of my favorites for getting me out of my box and reminding me that I am young and alive and need some antlers for my bedroom and a hot pink bathroom with a chandelier. Oh, and that I need to travel abroad more often to acquire weird, wacky stuff.

I do adore Domino for perking up my tired soul. But generally, I leave the store with one of the following trio in hand: Traditional Home, House Beautiful, or Beautiful Homes. I like the classics and these magazines whisper sweet nothings to my soul! I think my favorite is Beautiful Homes, because I love reading the featured home stories, and all the houses are insanely gorgeous. Although the colour palettes in House Beautiful are often so fresh and to-die-for soothing! Have you noticed this?Anyway, what I wonder is...

Which magazine(s) do you love most? Is there one that captures your style to a T? Which one makes your heart sing when you see a fresh new cover on the shelf, or in your mailbox? How many do you buy a month? Tell me everything!

P.S. I just discovered my local library has decor mags. Although they are sometimes scruffy, you can catch up on issues you may have missed...and colour photocopiers mean you can make copies of favorite things for your files before they are due back! How economical!

  1. Now those look like fabulous choices...I must get to Canada one day to enjoy some of those selections. I really enjoyed Victoria when it was around the first time...have yet to find the new issue. I have been a subscriber to Country Living since the very beginning and love to get cozy with a new issue, a cup of something hot, and a blankie. Gosh, this is making me sleepy. :) Hope that you get lots of down time to read and enjoy your magazines. It's a restorative thing.

  2. Well, I have a "teensy" addiction to home decor magazines! I blame it on being so busy with kids that actually reading a book cover to cover seems overwhelming. That, and the fact that I love to devour a book...yep, read it in less 24 hrs...which means absolutely nothing would get accomplished by me that day!

I love Country Home, Country Living, Home Companion, House and Home, BHG, and Canadian Home and Country (which is probably most reflective of my style...or what I would like my style to reflect...if I had the right house and money!!).

I dare not count how many magazines I have in my home that I cannot bear to get rid of. Oh, and I can't get magazines out of the library...I am a secret page ripper outer...and I know that is just WRONG...so I won't let myself borrow any from there!! At least I admitted it!!!

  3. Vee, I haven't read Victoria but I will look it up. Country Living was my favorite magazine as a teenage girl! I so wanted a house that was cozy and country-styled and still love that magazine to this day, especially since country got updated!

Linda, I know what you mean about the books. I read about one novel every 3 wks but it is only because I ride the train 1.5h per day total! I love magazines too because they are quick - 5 minutes before bed to give me something to dream on!

I will have to look up Canadian Home & Country, as I have never actually bought it, but noticed they have some bedraggled copies at the library (likely with missing pages....hmmmm...i wonder)

    :)

  4. Terri,
You are. KILLING. me! I am a total magazine freak. A decorating junkie. And an absolute nut when it comes to visiting your blog. I'm just a vegging here lately. I don't leave, much, just browse from one sight to the next. I'm afraid I may need to remove you from my site so that I never, NEVER come here again. Otherwise, I will never finish. my. HOUSE! A HA!! Yes, there I have it! YOU are to blame. thank you. finally, I have something other, rather someone, other than myself, to blame it on.

As I said, you, my friend in the blogosphere, are killing me. I, too have many decorating mags I love. And deco sites. Many, start right HERE!

  5. Too funny, just did a post about being on the fence about Cottage Living. I have a subscription to pretty much every design magazine possible (way cheaper than buying at the store). My favorites are Western Interiors and House Beautiful, but ask me next week it will probably change :-).

P.S. I'm so sorry to hear about all of the stress you and your family has been under. I hope it gets better foe each and everyone one of you.

    XO Calie

Hi Terri. Late again, but I am finally getting by to join in on the fun here. I of course love magazines. LOVE. All of them. Being in interior design I have to stretch myself to see and take in new things. It is easy for me to gravitate towards ones featuring styles I personally favor, but like you I find great joy in exploring the possibility that I do need a pink chandelier in the bathroom. Or God forbid some antlers.

I have found myself as a designer needing to be aware of new possibilities for all sorts of clients, so looking at different magazines, including fashion magazines, has helped me to appreciate all different ways of designing rooms and given me new inspiration.

In different houses I have lived in, I have favored different magazines. When I lived in a little cottage, I liked Mary Englebreit's Home Companion (I am not sure Cottage Living was out then!). But in my bigger house, I like Traditional Home, or House Beautiful, Victoria, or many others.

Now, what is Beautiful Homes? I am not sure I know what that is. Guess I better find out in case it is something I don't know about!

Thanks for the fun post. Hope you are getting through your week!

    xo,
    Melissa

  7. Hi there,
just stumbled across your blog, had a good wander around. Interesting blog you have. I have always loved flipping through interior decorating magazines since I was a child and one magazine that I enjoy and grew up with is Homes and Gardens. Both British and Ozzie editions. But I'm not choosy in that sense ,give me any sort of Interior decorating mags and I'd probably be happy. A must have for me when I'm on a flight, at the beach, ypu name it is a decor mag. Do visit me at www.vintagedelights.blogspot.com,
    I shall visit again.
    Ta for now, Adlann

  8. I am late to the game on this! I also get a little thrill of joy when I open up the mailbox and see a magazine nestled inside. My favorites are Southern Accents, which is truly a wonderful and gracious magazine, just my style. I also love House Beautiful. I got tired of Traditional Home, but it seems as if they are freshening it up a bit and getting a bit more streamlined, so I am going to continue my subsciption. I am not as enamored with House & Garden, but all of the bloggers have been reporting that it is closing shop.

I'm not sure exactly why but this blog is loading very slow for me. Is anyone else having this problem or is it a issue on my end? I'll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

Heya terrific blog! Does running a blog such as this
require a great deal of work? I have very little expertise in programming however I was hoping to start my own blog
in the near future. Anyhow, if you have any ideas or techniques for new blog owners
please share. I know this is off topic but I simply wanted to ask.
    Appreciate it!
