Office Edit?

My home office has blue walls, and while I'm very fond of the colour (Scribe from General Paint), nothing in the room really relates to the walls.

An old photo - the art has changed over the dresser, the chair will be reupholstered (once I decide on a wall colour) and the desk and side table (not shown) are getting new skirts.

The rest of the room is all linen and gray and off-white.

So I'm thinking of painting the walls something like this:
Sherwin Williams Anew Gray.  SW has some gorgeous grays and greiges.

It reminds me a lot of BM's Revere Pewter, a perennial favorite which is a bit lighter and grayer:

I love the blue but it doesn't relate to anything.

I couldn't figure out why my office lacked coherence (maybe it's all the misfit furniture) with its beautiful blue walls until I realized that:

Decorators repeat the wall colour in the accessories and it helps to tie the room together.

For example, in blue and white bedrooms, the blue is often repeated in pillows, or the bed skirt, say, and the room looks "pulled together".

Maybe this is Decorating 101, but it really never occurred to me because I always use neutrals in walls and furniture and it never became a conscious issue...it always just worked.

So with that wisdom, I'm rethinking the blue, since I am not really keen to repeat the blue in fabrics (I'd rather go neutral)!

Such a beautiful medium blue.  I might redeploy it in my downstairs bedroom where the current pale blue doesn't have enough gravitas for the low light...

I would really love to add wallpaper to the room, like this Farrow & Ball paper:
Silvergate BP-804

Or this one:
Orangerie BP 2502

However, at $300 per roll (3 roll minimum), this could be a very expensive experiment!  Plus, I'd probably have to hire an experienced wallpaper hanger.

So I think I might be a coward and just stick with greige walls...

What do you think?

Do I keep the pretty blue and introduce some blue accessories, say a blue pillow on a future linen chair, etc.?

Or do I go greige and make a neutral scheme (with lots of white and black and wood as my accents)?  This might look better with the neoclassical elements I seem to be collecting in here.

Do tell!

  1. The blue is so pretty. But I say go with the greige! Spring is such a wonderful time to re-paint / re-decorate. I love BM's revere pewter.

  3. I love the blue, but if all your accent pieces are greys and neutrals, go with that.

  4. You should know better than to ask a bunch of bloggers what color to paint. The blue is pretty but I would buy the greige paint, put it on one wall and then get scared and paint it back. Or leave the wall half painted for a year until I picked another color.

    1. You know me so well. Paint half and leave it a year, then change my mind completely. Yes, I will do that. haha. The curtains in the office are still not hung and I noticed I bought them in late 2010. How sad is that? After I got them a year or so, I decided they are not what I wanted so I did nothing...
Must get things wrapped up this year...

  5. When testing a new color, I buy one of those $5 testers from SW and paint the back of a big piece of cheap wallpaper. I can move it around to see how it looks with the woodwork, rug, and existing furniture in different light.

    1. Yes, I do the same. It is more a question of philosophy in this case than the colour itself. Once I am committed, I will try a bunch of testers to get the right greige. :)

  6. I love the Behr Pewter Mug gray I have on the walls. Very restfully and makes art work pop. Frame that wall paper sample...way too dear for 3 rolls! Plus hanging its a pain in the neck and you don't need any more of that!

  7. Love the wall paper. Could you part wallpaper? Though I also like the blue! Sorry , no help at all.

Here is an idea that just popped in my mind: why not buy a couple of blue accent things you think would look good; bring them home, see if it pleases you. If not, just return to the store. No big repainting job; easy to see if blue accents will make you stick with the blue paint. Or not.

  9. By all means, if you like the blue, keep the blue. You don't have to repeat the blue at all but rather choose another predominant color to repeat. For instance, my bedroom is pale blue and at the moment my coverlet is mainly blue but I would rather have all white bed linens. I have just had custom white cotton curtains made and have all darkish wood furniture, making the blue the "wildcard" color. Greige is nice too but don't think that the wall color dictates everything else. It can be its own thing if everything else relates to one another. Make sense?

  10. my first comment, but i just had to say something! i say keep the blue- i tend to like blue more in theory than anything else because i never see it done properly, and that shade you have is STUNNING. it's perfectly calming and light enough, dark enough- very, very elegant. i'd suggest not to accessorize with blue, but keep your tones all in the same family. for example, upholster the chair a cotton-linen that mimics that anew gray paint swatch. i noticed the wicker and wood on that gorgeous dresser- if they were white it would really lighten the area. i think the room has an amazing tone tat just needs to be refined to be perfect for you.

Yesterday, while I was at work, my cousin stole my iphone and tested to see if it can survive a thirty foot drop, just so she can be a youtube sensation.
My iPad is now broken and she has 83 views. I know this is entirely off topic but I had to share it with someone!
