Matthew Matthew Matthew

I don't know if you're watching Downton Abbey, but a few weeks ago we received the Season 3 box set in the mail and watched it in two sittings, like drug addicts.

(If you have not watched it yet and intend to...please stop reading this post!)

I waited until the rest of the world, watching on Masterpiece Theatre, finally caught up before I could talk to anyone about the terrible ending!

Let's just say, I will sorely miss these beautiful blue eyes and those windswept blond locks, not to mention the beautiful voice.

My heart has been smashed into pieces (*unlike the entail).

I cannot believe I have to wait another 11 months for Season 4.

I cannot bear it...(said with an English accent).

David and I have watched and re-watched Seasons 1 and 2 so many times that I can recite entire scenes.  We are starting Season 3 over again and I shall savour every scene with dear Matthew in it.

And I finally got over my shock and anger at Julian Fellowes after reading that Dan Stevens wanted to leave the show.  You can read all about it here.

RIP Matthew.  I will never forget you.

  1. Yes, I totally agree with you....he was really lovely! Although I've seen an article with a picture of a supposedly new love interest for Mary next season and he's pretty hot! LOL We may get over Matthew's untimely demise quicker than we think. ;) http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20675077,00.html

  2. Matthew was my favorite on the show, I like everyone but when someone would ask that would be my answer....We watched last night, when Matthew was driving home I started yelling at the tv... no don't do this, not again, no do not do this again, nooooo... some how I knew what was coming...
My husband and I looked at each other in disbelief, even pbs did not come back on right away they just left their call letters on for a minute or so, seemed to me out of respect to all of us that were just stunned...
Waiting for season 4 will be long, I agree but at least it's not over...
Hope your good today, think of you often, Regards, Carol Anne

  3. Hey, Friend! What a shocker!!! I was sooooooo sad, at first, as Mathew was one of my favorite characters. However, I now feel: if he left the show that made him famous.......go on, then! By next season, he'll be history. Now if Maggie Smith left.....OH, NO, NO, NO!!!! Madame is irreplaceable ~

    1. I had the same reaction. I was not quite so sad when I learned we'd been dumped. Haha.

  4. Lady Sybil's death was spoiled in a comment on Loi's blog a few weeks before it happened. I knew it was coming but it was still gut wrenching to watch. It was so well done.

I was glad I'd not read of this shocking ending beforehand but I had a sick feeling when I first saw him whizzing down the road. I think covered my eyes and just peeked through my fingers.

I'll be suffering through withdrawal for weeks.

    1. Yes, like you I stumbled upon news of Lady Sybil's death quite by accident on a blog. And like you, I had NOT heard of Matthew's, thankfully, mainly because I have been avoiding blogs that might even mention Downton

So I was shocked and horrified along with the rest of you. Apparently the poor Brits had to face it on Christmas Day.

  5. All I could think about last night was those poor, little babies that have to grow up without a parent...and then I remembered that it is all make believe and was able to get some sleep. I knew what was coming when I saw the car too!

    1. Yes, those poor little make-believe babies. How sad, growing up in that big house with everything they desire, but no Matthew or Sybil. :D

  6. We watched that episode on Boxing Day and I felt sick. How could they kill off Matthew! I wonder what role he can possibly play that will make him more beloved?

  7. Just awful. I actually felt angry last night when the show ended that way. I thought, that's it, too many people are dying on this show, it's too much. But today I'm over those feelings of anger -- I just feel sad. Matthew was one of my favorite characters. Poor Mary and their new baby. And Matthew's poor mother (I love her!). She'll be crushed. I think of these characters as if they were real people. Such a great show.

    1. Claudia - I thought the exact same things. How will Mary cope? And poor Isobel! Her heart will break. Maybe Dr. Clarkson will be able to help.

    2. Yes, I like the potential romance between Dr. Clarkson and Isobel. I think they'd make a great couple.

  9. I was shocked and upset. My heart started pounding the minute I saw him in the car. Sometimes I hate British television! Thanks for that link - it does help to know it wasn't just a capricious plot twist.

  10. we watched this a few months ago. First, Sybil. Ugh, I could barely sleep the night after watching that episode, and I am still sick when I think of it. Then, Matthew? I am only glad I didn't watch it on Christmas day like the Brits did. I predict Lady Mary and Branson will unite in their mutual tragedies.

    1. Oh, I think Old Frosty is much too posh for dear Branson.

I had also heard that Matthew Crawley was to be killed and once I saw the scene felt somewhat let down as didn't find that there was enough time spent building to this dreadful conclusion... as with Sybil, it caught me totally by surprise and found the skilful way of writing made you believe that she would survive and then alas, it was not to be (I cried). Guess it's like George Clooney who left ER and we all know what happened to him! I feel so bad for Lady Mary and am curious to see how her character develops from here on in. Thanks for sharing your DA habit as so many of us share it! NB

  13. There was article in a British newspaper that the real duchess who lives in Highclere castle has been receiving letters and emails commiserating with the loss of her son in law !!! Just bizarre

  15. I knoooooow, it is so so so sad, and a bad ending on a end of a season.
Hope everything is ok with you. Here in the north parts of sweden we have a small glips of spring but as we know we have months left with snow, but the sun is back and it feels so nice.

    Love
