Like many, I first fell in love with the dreamy pastel-coloured paintings of Claude Monet at a university poster sale. Water lilies gilded my apartment walls for years. I still love these soft pretty paintings, but it's the dark and moody ones that have grown into my bones.
Here are five of my favorite "dark" impressionist paintings. There are many others. I love the contrast of light and dark, the saturated blues, the stark quiet scenes...

I love dark moody paintings in general. The ones you've chosen have strong value contrasts and are very pleasing to my eye, the first one in particular seems to fit my mood as we enter winter.

I don't usually equate the term "Dark" with Impressionist paintings so this is an interesting post to me.
ReplyDeleteI especially love the Monet seascape and the last one with the snow on the roof tops-so unexpectedly beautiful.
I don't know if I would say it's my favorite, but we had a copy of Mary Cassatt's French woman reading (in the yellow dress)in our house when I was little. It's a comfortable and familiar image that reminds me of that time. I used to think it was a painting of my mom!

My favorite is Manet's last painting, "The Bar at the Folies-Bergere...in fact I used it as the inspiration when I remodeled my kitchen. But they are all so lovely it is really hard to have a favorite. Come visit me sometime.(-:
