Our Big News (A Wedding!)

David and I have been together almost 9 years.
We call each other "husband and wife" and consider ourselves committed.  But we've never gotten married!

Our conversations about marriage over the years usually began with,
"So, do you think we should get married?" and would end with "what do you want for supper?"  We were simply together and just got on with our lives.

But over time, we've come to deeply and humbly appreciate what it means to be in a committed relationship.  We have become each other's family.  So it was becoming time to mark that properly.  But I was still utterly shocked last fall when David surprised me with a ring in Paris (sigh) and popped The Question.

So now we're planning a little wedding for next spring at a lovely historic garden in Calgary.  This has been absorbing my time, as you can imagine.  Initially, we thought of going to City Hall and then a restaurant, but I figured there's only a day or two days in one's life when one can art direct an entire day!

Here's the inspiration board for Our Big Day.  We will have a small event, with about 20 guests, mostly family and our best friends:
Inspiration board by Alexandra of Pink & Honey Event Styling

I'm working with a wonderful stylist, Alexandra, of Pink & Honey to help coordinate my aesthetic vision for the day.  I don't have any friends as interested in decor as me and really didn't want to have to coordinate all the props, setup and tear down myself, so A.J. is like a "best friend for hire" who just happens to be an uber-talented stylist!  She also has such lovely calm energy and poise and I know she will create a beautiful event for us!

Our aesthetic, as described by A.J., is "warm garden elegance with classic and vintage-inspired details".  I think she summed it up perfectly!

Our colour palette is white and champagne neutrals, accented with gold, blush and black.

I will share more details as time goes on!

  3. I always said if I ever got married again, it would be a very small affair, with about 20 family members and friends invited. But it would have the most amazing flowers and the finest of food. Sort of the wedding equivalent of a "jewel box apartment". Your inspiration board is gorgeous, your flowers exquisite .... Congratulations!

What wonderfully happy news for you and your love. Judging by the photos on your site, you two look like you are made for each other and what a dear to propose in Paris. I'm so excited for you and the fun you are having planning this intimate affair in such good taste, just like all your decorating. Can't wait to see more pictures. Fondly, Cheri

Congratulations!! Nice to know that folks still value the marriage commitment. Have been committed in marriage for 40 years and counting. Love your colour palette and can't wait to hear more details. Having lived in Calgary you have me guessing on what historic garden - perhaps starts with an "L"? NB in Ontario

  20. Oh congratulations! Small weddings are always the best -more fun - more intimate - and less expensive haha. It concentrates on the real reason for the celebration instead of turning into a blowout that no one REALLY ever enjoys. STRESS! I hope when the time comes you'll share your special day with your blogger friends here! xo

P.S. - I had the chance to visit your beautiful area of Canada this summer. My brother got married in Banff this summer (he lives in Vancouver, and married a Canadian), and my entire family was smitten with the beauty of the Canadian Rockies.
